I would like to share some of expensive food in the world from my reading.

Matsutake Mushrooms


The matsutake, or mattake, mushroom is expensive , because it is very hard to find as it grows under particular trees  and are usually concealed under fallen leaves and duff on the forest floor.

Matsutake are known to grow in China, Japan, Korea, Finland, Sweden, among other countries. In Japan it is most commonly associated with Japanese Red Pine.

The price for matsutake in the Japanese market is highly dependent on quality, availability, and origin. The Japanese matsutake at the beginning of the season, which is the highest grade, can go up to $2,000 per kilogram. In contrast, the average value for imported matsutake is about $90 per kilogram.




Wagyu steak



Wagyu ( Japanese cow) refers to several breeds of cattle genetically predisposed to intense marbling and to producing a high percentage of oleaginous unsaturated fat. The meat from wagyu cattle is known worldwide for its marbling characteristics, increased eating quality through a naturally enhanced flavor, tenderness and juiciness, and a high market value.


 In several areas of Japan, beef is shipped with area names. Some examples are Kobe, Mishima, Matsusaka, Ōmi, and Sanda beef. Highly prized for their rich flavor, these cattle produce arguably the finest beef in the world.

Wagyu cattle's genetic predisposition yields a beef that contains a higher percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef. The increased marbling also improves the ratio of monounsaturated fats to saturated fats.This comes from cows that are allegedly fed only Beer and massaged by hand to ensure a tenderness and marbling beyond compare.

The second place in the world to have the biggest herds is New Zealand , It has been judged to be the finest beef in the world

 These price of these beef to extremely expensive (about US$ 50 per 150 grams of fillet steak sold retail in Japan).


Red king crabs



can be very large, sometimes reaching a width of 11 inches and a leg span of  6 ft


It was named after the colour it turns when it is cooked rather than the colour of a living animal, which tends to be more burgundy.

The king crab is native to the Bering Sea, north Pacific Ocean and neighbouring Alaskan waters, It will cost around $ 35 ( 1680 /- ) per crab in native areas , due to its size it is not available all around the world.

the King crab famous because in order to catch them, the fisherman have to risk their life against the extreme cold weather  and big wave at Bering Sea




Truffle ( fungus )



is the fruiting body of an underground mushroom , are highly prized  as they cannot be cultivated.

There are 2 types of Truffles - white and Black

 white Truffle can cost $ 5000 USD ( 2.40 Lakh ) per kilo , approx

 Black Truffle can cost around $ 2200 USD ( 1.56 Lakh ) per kilo , approx


Due to which the french had called it " the diamond of the kitchen "


Dansuke Watermelon



The Densuke watermelon has round fruit up to 25 lb (11 kg). The rind is black with no stripes or spots. It is grown only on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, where up to 10,000 watermelons are produced every year.

Because they are so rare, these melons can be extremely expensive.

In June 2008, one of the first harvested watermelons was sold at an auction for 650,000 yen (6,300 USD), making the most expensive watermelon ever sold. The average selling price is generally around 25,000 yen (250 USD).A large black watermelon grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido , Japan.


Yubari Melons




The Yubari King is a cantaloupe cultivar farmed in greenhouses in Yūbari, Hokkaidō, a small town close to Sapporo. The Yubari King is a hybrid of two other cantaloupe cultivars: Earl's Favourite and Burpee's "Spicy" Cantaloupe. This hybrid's scientific name is Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus Naud. cv. Yubari King.

Some Japanese people present Yubari King melons as gifts during Chūgen. A top-grade melon is to be perfectly round and have an exceptionally smooth rind. A portion of the stem, which is snipped with scissors, is left on top for aesthetic appeal.

They are used for summer gift giving, and usually come in with a wood box for gift packaging.


The soil the melons are grown in is volcanic ash. It's not what's in the volcanic soil, but how the soil behaves.

It lets growers there easily control the temperature of the soil, and the ash lets water quickly drain through, allowing for the top to remain dry, which promotes the size of the melons.

Each melon could cost around $ 200 USD ( 9600 /- ).


Almas caviar





comes from Iran making it extremely rare and extremely expensive.

Almas Caviar is white in appearance that can probably be explained by the eggs which come from a 100 year old albino Sturgeon from the Caspian Sea

The only known outlet is the Caviar House & Prunier in London England’s Picadilly that sells a kilo in a tin of  24 - karat gold for about $25,000 ( 12 Lakh ).


Tieguanyin ( Tea )



is the most expensive tea in the world, This tea has oolong leaves, and is highly oxidized.

One of the reasons as to why this tea is so expensive is because of the “ gung fu ” style, which means “ great skill ”.

The tea can be brewed with multiple infusion, for three to four times, so the more you brew the tastier it becomes.

This tea costs around $3,000 USD per kilo.


Hop Asparagus



A rare delicacy from the salad days of ancient Egypt is being grown and marketed at Munsley Court Farm.

Hop asparagus may also be the oldest cultivated root vegetable in the world.

it is only harvested in four locations , hence it is very expensive.

A kilo can cost upto $ 238 ( approx 11,400 /- )


La Bonnotte ( Potato )



The price of one kilogram of La Bonnotte potatoes can reach $700, making it the most expensive potato on Earth. Its ridiculous price doesn’t just have to do with its delicious salty flavor, but also with the fact that it’s very rare. This variety of potato is only cultivated on Noirmoutier, an island off the coast of western France, and just 100 tons are produced every year, mainly because they have to be picked by hand.

 La Bonnotte’s tuber remains attached to the stem making too fragile to harvest by machine, not to mention it also needs to be fertilized with algae and seaweed to give it that distinct earthy, salty flavor. Its fragile nature simply didn’t make it profitable enough for large agricultural companies, and it was only because of teh love and care of a few French potato lovers that it didn’t go extinct.

The salty, nutty and light potato gets its taste from the light sandy soil and the influences of sea water and algea ( french ) give La Bonnotte the taste of the sea naturally.


A kilo of La Bonnotte potato could cost you around $ 680 USD ( approx 32,750 /- )

Pule cheese



this comes from Donkey's milk from the Zasavica reserve north of Belgrade , capital of Serbia

A kilogram of the smoked cheese is priced at $ 1350 USD ( approx 65,000 ) per kilo


As it takes around 25 litres of milk to get one kilo , which is collected from about 100 Balkan Donkeys

Saffron


is derived from the saffron crocus flower.

A pound of dry saffron (0.45 kg) requires 50,000 to 75,000 flowers to make, meaning an entire football field of these flowers.
A kilo can cost around $ 11,000 USD ( 5.28 Lakh )

 
Macadamia nut




is the most expensive nut in the world, cultivated in Australia.

The macadamia tree produces nuts only after it’s 7-10 years old, requiring fertile soil and heavy rainfall.

A kilo would cost around $ 30 USD ( approx 1450 /- )


Blue Fin Tuna


is found in atlantic and pacific ocean, and it is very rare as its species is in decline.

Hence are highly prized for sushi and sashimi.

A kilo would cost around $ 390 USD ( 18,750 /- approx )

Abalone


are small to very large-sized edible sea snails

It is considered a symbol of wealth and prestige, and is traditionally reserved for special occasions such as weddings and other celebrations.

Each abalone would cost around $ 38 USD ( 1800 /- approx )




Foie Gras

is a popular french delicacy made out of duck liver. One that has been specially fattened.

It has a rich, buttery, delicate texture and taste, and would cost around $ 70 USD ( 3400 /- approx )


Knipschildt Chocolatier



chocolates are handmade artisan products using only the freshest natural ingredients, with no additives or preservatives.

contains a creamy truffle ganache made from French Valrhona chocolate blended with fresh cream infused with vanilla pods and pure Italian truffle oil.

Each one of these luscious truffle chocolates has a price tag $ 2,600 USD ( 1.25 Lakh ) per kilo

The omelet


consists of 10 ounces of sevruga caviar , a whole lobster, and 6 eggs and is available at Le Parker Meridien restaurant in New York.

Each omlet would cost around $ 1000 USD ( 48,000 /- )

The sundae ( Ice Cream )

made up of 5 scoops of the richest Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, Madagascar vanilla, 23K edible gold leaf and one of the most expensive chocolates in the world , Amedei Porceleana.

Served at Serendipity 3 , a popular restaurant in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Each sundae costs around $ 1000 USD ( 48,000 /- )


Kona Nigari water


The desalinated water high in minerals from the deep seas off Hawaii , costs  around $ 16.75 USD ( approx 804 /- ) per bottle

The 12 inch pizza



is densely packed with an assortment of some of the world’s most expensive food ingredients, such as lobster marinated in cognac , caviar soaked in champagne , sunblush tomato sauce , Scottish smoked salmon , venison medallions , prosciutto , and vintage balsamic vinegar.

In addition to all these fine ingredients, it’s topped with a significant amount of edible 24-carat gold flakes.

The pizza would cost around $ 3700 USD ( 1.76 Lakh )


The club sandwich


This triple-decker delicacy contains the finest chicken, ham, hard-boiled quails’ eggs and white truffles and it’s currently sold at Cliveden, Berkshire.

It costs around $ 200 USD ( 9600 /- ) per sandwich
